C3001: Puzzle Patterns for Fitness and Footwork

Course Details

3 WEEK CLASS - This class is all about helping dogs learn how to use their bodies—on purpose.

Through carefully designed pattern games and movement puzzles, we’ll build balance, coordination, and body awareness while engaging the brain. These exercises aren’t about speed or repetition for its own sake. Instead, they encourage dogs to slow down, organize their movement, and solve physical problems in ways that support precision and long-term soundness.

Dogs will learn to:

  • Shift smoothly between movement and stillness
  • Find balance and stability
  • Place their feet accurately
  • Coordinate front and rear end movement
  • Navigate space with greater awareness and control

Because the work is structured and predictable, many dogs also show improvements in emotional regulation, focus, and confidence. The patterns create clarity, while the puzzles invite curiosity and thoughtful effort.

This class is appropriate for:

  • Sport dogs building a strong foundation for future competition goals
  • Young, awkward dogs learning how their bodies work
  • Dogs rebuilding fitness and body awareness after graduating from rehab
  • Dogs who benefit from lower-arousal, brain-engaging movement
  • “Bulldozer” types, whose natural inclination is to power through physical challenges rather than think their way through them

Each exercise can be modified to suit your specific goals, making the class accessible while still offering meaningful challenge. You’ll leave with practical games you can use at home to support fitness, injury prevention, and better movement habits.

We’re not just exercising dogs.
We’re teaching them how to move well.

Teaching Approach:

Lectures will be released in two clusters each week -the first set at the start of each week, and the 2nd midway through the week. Lecture are primarily written, with visual diagrams to show setups for each exercise and short (usually 0:30-0:60) demonstrations of each exercise. There is no voice over on videos.

Feedback is written and may contain screenshots with mark-ups when visual details are required. Student forums are checked twice daily so it's easy to get into a rhythm of training and receiving prompt feedback for students enrolled at gold and silver levels.

Prerequisites and Equipment

Pre-requisites- dogs should be sound and cleared for physical activity. Exercises are safe for all ages but may require adaptation in duration or sizes of props for very young puppies.

Space Required: exercises are designed to start in a small space (10'x10') and can be grown to accommodate additional space if and when it is available. Training spaces MUST have good traction, if you are working on slick flooring, please consider adding foam matting or yoga mats to prevent slipping.

Supplies:

  1. A low platform with good traction. A cato platform or plank is a good choice, or a DIY style can be built with foam mats. Detailed instructions for any DIY props will be found in a pre-class lecture (available as soon as you register to give you time to find supplies and build!) You can also be creative and come up with your own design- it should be a least big enough for your dog to sit on comfortably, and a bit larger is totally fine!
  2. 2 x bowls – ideally, bowls that don't excessively slide or tip over on your training surface
  3. at least 3 x poles (to step over). These could be cavaletti poles, broomsticks, jumps at lowest setting. Ideal setting will be wrist height or lower for your dog for most exercises, so be sure your poles can be lowered to that height (or secured on the ground without rolling for small dogs)
  4. 4x "Vertical Props"- cones, jump standards, toilet plungers- these will serve as items your dog will go around, so taller is better than shorter (ideally at least eye level but experienced dogs may be okay with shorter objects).
  5. 4 x Low Profile foot targets. I found great ones at my local dollar store (sold as silicone pot holders!) You can also make out of foam mats or yoga mats or purchase from fitness suppliers.
  6. Some VARIETY of things your dog can walk ON- these can be additional platforms, couch cushions, folded tarp, stack of folded towels, wooden plank, a cardboard box with the sides cut very low. Any items that can be stepped on should have safe traction, you may be able to add yoga mats or traction tape to increase it if needed.
  7. Household items or training/fitness props: We will make use of portable objects around your home, get ready to get creative! These may include chairs, boxes, blankets trash cans, footstools, inflatable discs, propel platform, etc.
