B3001: Click for Barking

Course Details

3 WEEK CLASS - Is your dog the neighborhood alarm system? Whether it’s a passing car or a stray leaf, constant alert barking can turn a peaceful home into a high-stress environment. It’s time to regain your quiet!

Click for Barking is a technique Irith Bloom developed 15 or so years ago to reduce alert barking. She has taught the technique to countless people and dogs since to great effect. Despite its name, Click for Barking does not require the use of a clicker. Also, despite what you might assume about marking behavior such as barking, it does reduce barking. Intrigued? Want to deep dive into how to use the technique? Join Irith for a class that will transform your life – or at least make it a bit quieter.

NOTE: The techniques covered in this class help with barking at sudden triggers such as noises and people appearing, and also work extremely well for things like barking at the doorbell and barking at fences.

Teaching Approach:

Lectures will be released once a week, and each week will feature several lectures. You can watch all the week’s lectures at once or space them out, as you prefer.

Irith usually checks class forums morning and evening (Pacific time) each day. She endeavors to address all posts within about 18 hours, but it may occasionally take a little longer.

NOTE: For those who have taken classes with Irith before, please note that due to a temporary, medium-term medical issue with her voice, she may not be able to record many (or any) lectures in video format the way she has in most of her other classes.

Syllabus

View Full Syllabus

The syllabus for this course is pretty simple, because three weeks is just right for a thorough and deep dive into addressing alert barking* through Click for Barking.  While information will be provided about other types of barking, this course is intended to address alert barking only, not other types of barking.

* Alert barking is the kind of barking that happens in response to triggers such as sudden noises or people walking by your front window or fence line.  There are many other examples of when alert barking might happen.  Feel free to reach out to me if you are not sure if what you are seeing is alert barking!

Topics covered will include:

  • Alert barking vs. other types of barking
  • How different types of barking can intersect and overlap
  • Figuring out if what you are seeing is (at least mostly) alert barking
  • Addressing alert barking through management
  • Reducing alert barking through the Click for Barking technique
  • How and when to practice Click for Barking
  • Tips and tricks for optimizing Click for Barking
  • Troubleshooting

Prerequisites and Equipment

There are no formal prerequisites for the course, but the course is intended to address alert barking only.  That means if you enroll in this course, you should either have an interest in learning how to address alert barking, or want to reduce this type of behavior in your own home.

NOTE: Consider a vet check before starting this or any other training!
