OB365: Open Obedience Fun - Putting the Pieces Together

Course Details

Open IS fun!! In this class, I deconstruct all the exercises into manageable pieces. Each piece is taught and maintained like a trick. This makes the exercises accessible for us and the dogs. Your dogs will understand the exercises and perform them with joy and energy. As we put the pieces together, we will maintain that light attitude. We will use backward chaining and forward chaining to pull the exercises together. All while maintaining the quality of the pieces that make up the chain. This approach makes it easy to problem solve and “fix” pieces within an exercise.
We will look at games that teach dogs how to handle pressure in a positive way. We will also look at games that maintain drive, especially for behaviors that are in the middle of the chain.

This class can benefit people that have a foundation in the open exercises and are looking to put the pieces together. It can also help teams that are trained through open but are having problems or want to add excitement to the exercises.  Heeling will not be covered in this class.

Prerequisites: Gold Spot Dogs should have foundation skills for all the Open exercises.

Teaching Approach

This class will have written and video lectures each week. Each lecture will be broken down into small pieces. There will be video examples demonstrating all exercises. Because everyone has their own learning style, I encourage students to move at their own pace. I understand that each dog and handler are unique and do my best to accommodate their needs. Students will need to move around with their dogs as required
for open exercises. I will work with you to modify the exercises to your abilities. A few of the games will require quick physical movement from the trainer for short periods and distances. Students will need access to a space large enough so they can play games that involve the dog running and jumping over the broad and high jumps, doing a full length recall etc.

Pieces in the Middle. Once people put all the pieces of an exercise together, they tend to always practice the exercise. Over and over. Except that’s boring to the dog. And the pieces in the middle of the chain get weak. And those are the important pieces. They are the primary parts of the exercises. We need to reward them…. A lot.  We need to keep those pieces fun and motivating. We want the dogs to think the pieces in the middle are super fun tricks. That’s why I break all the exercises into pieces...and work on the pieces forever…throughout the entirety of a dog’s career. Resist the temptation to always practice the full chain. That’s the old way of training. This way is tons more fun for our dogs.

Tricks & Offering When Leaving And When You Turn Around. For my regular students, THIS IS NEW! We are going to ask the dogs for specific tricks…or to offer (pick the one your dog prefers)…as we leave them!! You can use a mat or platform to help anchor the dog. You must start up close…just a couple of steps. Yes, the dog will likely move initially. No big deal. Just put them back. They will figure it out. Remember, it’s just a silly pet trick! Stay there, do the trick, you get reinforced. Once they are fluent, you can start adding distance. This will take a while. Work on this throughout the six-week course. It has multiple uses:  It keeps them actively engaged while you are walking away. You can ensure they are focused when you turn around. I always make sure they are actively engaged before cuing them for the actual exercise. If they are not, I ask for tricks or offering. Very quickly they are back in the game. I use this with the BJ, CD, SSGL and DOR!

Stand Stay Get Your Leash (“SSGL”): Lots of teams flunk this! Why? It’s not trained enough.  It seems simple and silly. But it has many challenges. It’s at the end of a long chain. Many dogs are mentally tired. Other dogs know they are getting near the end and want to get out of the ring to their reinforcer. As you go to the setup point, the judge moves with you. Often the judge is actually converging on the dog. And the judge is nearby during the exercise. That puts a lot of pressure on the dogs. There is an enormous amount of dead time. Plenty of time for the dog to get distracted and/or stressed. Often in training when we return to the dog, it’s because the dog made a mistake! Some dogs worry as we return. This is an exercise. It needs to be trained. Routinely. It’s definitely not the most fun exercise. Which makes it even more important to train routinely!

The Precue is super important for this exercise. Make sure it does NOT look like any other precue! It can easily be confused with Heeling, Signals, Figure 8, Moving Stand, CD…. A clear precue is a huge help. In training, I head to the setup point. I give the precue. Then I say the judge’s words, and mine. Hesitate for a few seconds, then give the cue.  You will see on your dog’s face when they clearly understand what’s coming! I work on this a lot.  Multiple reps within a training session.  Yes, JUST this piece, with the wait, and take two steps. That’s it for now. Make this fluent.

A sampling of what prior students have said about this course ...

I was thrilled to find a class in which the Open exercises were broken down just when we needed it. Petra's classes really help you make work on the pieces of the obedience exercises fun for you and your dog. Success with the small pieces builds confidence for both my dog and me. Success builds our positive connection and our dog-handler relationship as a team. Petra's feedback is spot-on and always offered in a supportive and kind manner. Thank you for this new class!

This Open class had so much wonderful information on how to train all of the little pieces of the exercises. The way Petra teaches it, makes so much sense for when it’s time to put it all together.

If you want to compete in AKC open obedience, then this class is for you. Petra will help you at whatever level you’re at And makes obedience, training, fun

Lots of material for all knowledge levels. I love how Petra takes exercises apart into small elements with fun factor for the learner (human and dog). Her detailed feedback to all Gold threads helped at Bronze level, too, since it provided even more ideas and tips. Highly recommended for anyone training for Open level OB.

Petra's lectures, video examples of the exercises with her own dogs, and her constructive feedback on all the Open exercises helped me become a better trainer with my dog.

Petra is a great instructor. She gets back to students very quickly and gives thoughtful thorough feedback. I definitely felt like she was really focusing on my videos and questions and not just trying to "clear the forums". She has an amazing eye and picks up things about my dog that I did not see. Her ability to be encouraging and tell me what I need to fix is great and I feel like I got a lot of good, solid help in this class.

Thank you Petra for bringing out the best insight and work ethic for Obedience training and trialing with our partner. Kudos to you!!!!

Petra is a wonderful, supportive teacher who always finds a way to help everyone, with grace and good humor.
