Dogs encounter various forms of pressure in the ring. Regardless of your sport. There is no getting around it. Pressure from the judge, the environment, and barriers. Some dogs innately handle pressure more easily than others. But don’t be fooled. ALL dogs feel pressure. Dogs instinctively want to move away from pressure. They either look to escape it or they “freeze”. If we attempt to work them through it, the pressure causes stress. Then dogs have a negative association with pressure. But we can teach our dogs that pressure cues something positive. Taught correctly pressure can create a positive conditioned emotional response. In this workshop, we will look at foundation games that teach our dogs to have a positive association with pressure. I start these games when my dogs are puppies. The games will also work for adult dogs. I created most of them when Zeal was a fully trained, seasoned dog at 8 years old. And they were a game changer for him.

I have been training and competing for several decades in a variety of sports including Hunt Tests, Field Trials, Nosework, Agility and Rally. My first love has always been competition obedience. I have been fortunate to win the AKC National Obedience Championship four times with three different dogs. (Click here for full bio and to view Petra's upcoming courses)
