Some dogs need a little extra motivation, and a jackpot can provide that. Sometimes we ask our dogs to tackle especially challenging work, and we want our reinforcer to match that effort. A jackpot rewards the dog for pushing through. I also use jackpots when chaining. Long chains without reinforcement can be difficult, and a well-timed jackpot helps dogs persevere. Finally, jackpots can be used as a breakthrough marker, when a dog has made a significant step forward in learning a new or difficult behavior. When used consistently, dogs become highly motivated to problem solve and stay committed to the task.

Many handlers avoid jackpots because they can create unwanted behaviors such as anticipation, vocalization, or difficulty responding to cues. In this workshop, I’ll show you how to work through these challenges. You’ll learn how to introduce the concept of a jackpot and how to build your dog’s ability to focus and manage arousal to earn it.

Used correctly and taught mindfully, jackpots are a powerful training tool. They can be used across all sports. Whether you’re just beginning your training journey or your dog is actively competing, jackpots are a valuable addition to your toolbox.
