WW555: Oct 5 - Practical Hide Placement: Setting Up Odor Pools

Course Details

Odor pools are probably the most challenging obstacle for dogs to work through. For the handler, setting up odor pools in training is quite possibly the most difficult hide problems to set. This workshop teaches you HOW!

When we trial or work our dog in any detection discipline, the odor has been out there for quite some time... usually a lot longer than our hide placement in training. All of that aging results in odor pools that give our dogs additional challenge in solving the problem. Not only does this pose a challenge for the dog, but the handler needs to learn to recognize what is an odor pool so that they can effectively work the dog through it.

In a lot of my classes I give the students a shortcut to set up artificial odor pools. We won't be doing that here. Here we will be looking at the drivers for odor pools and what elements need to be in place in order to create them. We will be exploring how to set odor pools both indoors and out and the role of aging our hides.

Working students will be setting their hide for their homework in a thoughtful manner and then running the dog in a way to demonstrate application of their knowledge.

If you want to learn how to effectively set hides that will challenge your dog in the way that they will be challenged at a trial, this workshop is for you!
