Three dogs taught me three very different lessons about resilience. Through case studies of my own current dogs, I'll explore how each needed something different from me to become a stronger, more resilient learner. Radish needed a long history of success to build the confidence to work through uncertainty. UCon needed agency and ways to communicate when he needed a moment. Checkmate taught me that persistence can look like resilience from the outside, even when escalating arousal and frustration are telling a very different story.
Resilience doesn't develop the same way in every dog. Through these three stories, we'll explore how understanding the individual dog can help us recognize what they need and create a path toward resilience that makes sense for that team.
