ODS04: 11am - Natural history and modern conditions - what do they have to do with arousal, frustration, resilience, and confidence in our dogs?

Course Details

A dog’s coping capacity - including their problem solving, their resilience, their confidence, and their performance - should not only be of concern to us as trainers and competitors, be as an ultimate welfare issue. By understanding two primary ways that this coping capacity may be supported, or compromised, we can identify the distinctly different kinds of interventions our dogs will need from us on each side. Additionally, appreciating the role that social relationships with other dogs play in contributing to stress management, resilience, and confidence in both areas is critical.

The natural history and genetics (nature) and individual factors, environments, and learning experiences (nurture) will further qualify the L.E.G.S. of a given dog for optimal consideration and accommodation as we consider these welfare questions. Join us for an important and relevant discussion as we introduce new questions to our work with dogs with very real and practical consequences through the lens of animal welfare science.
