FF120: Shaping Skills

Course Details

Are you interested in shaping?

Do you even know what ‘shaping’ is?

Do you want to know what the 5 key skills to shape, that will allow you to shape any sports behaviour or life skill?

Do you want to understand how to use shaping to work through frustration and help your dog develop the ability to ‘think in arousal’?

If so, join Kamal Fernandez, long time FDSA faculty member for an in depth look at shaping and help you understand it, or if you currently shape behaviour, get feedback to take your skills to the next level!

This course will cover:

  • Key skills to shape for any dog sport
  • Understanding errorless learning
  • Clean and clear training processes
  • Working through frustration via shaping
  • Improve mechanical skills and understand the 5 w’s of reinforcement

Teaching Approach

This course will comprise of weekly video lectures detailing the skills to shape, feedback on each skill and understanding how to progress, and how to implement these skills into other behaviours.

Shaping Skills Syllabus!

Week 1:

- Intro to marker words

  • - Using props
  • - Shaping differently… when to use and not use your clicker!
  • - Shaping basics, starting off shaping and what to shape shape first (On something), release cue.

Week 2:

  • - In something
  • - Teaching duration
  • - Green light/red light
  • - Tweezer fingers/Rapid feeding

Week 3:

  • - Around something
  • - Shaping motion, or speed

Week 4:

-Targeting!

  • - Head, shoulders, paws and toes!
  • - Using targets..
  • - Exit plans for targets!
  • - Creating distance!

Week 5:

  • - Pick up something
  • - Building duration

Week 6:

  • - Cues, proofing, spicing up your behaviours!
  • - How to add verbal cues, chaining basics and variable schedules of reinforcement!

Prerequisites & Supplies

For this course you will need the following items: - A box large enough for your dog to be able to sit in - Platform/cushion large enough for your dog to stand on - Target stick/wooden spoon - Plastic pipe large enough for your dog to hold - Perch. Examples of this can be an upturned dog bowl, plant pot base or any other suitable item. - Large cone with stable base that cannot be knocked over by your dog
