The puppy who screams and pulls to get to other dogs on walks, the dog who barks throughout the entire car ride, the agility partner who gets overexcited and goes off course… we all know these animals need help. Typical advice usually focuses on addressing the arousal that is happening in the moment, and that is certainly important. But it’s only part of the picture. Arousal levels are the result of more than just what happens at a trial, on a walk, or during a car ride. When we focus on just the obvious overarousal in one context, we miss out on opportunities to address arousal in lots of other contexts, which can make it a lot harder to get the results we want.
Factors affecting arousal include everything from how a home is set up to what an animal’s daily routine looks like and how the animal’s housemates behave. In this presentation, Irith will delve into ways to reduce arousal in daily life in the home. She will also discuss techniques for teaching animals to manage their own arousal more effectively. Wherever you are seeing overarousal issues, working on arousal management at home is one of the keys to success. Join Irith to learn more about this important piece of the puzzle!
