Course Details
We need reinforcement to teach and strengthen our dog’s behaviors. But at some point, we must reduce the amount of reinforcement. If we don’t, our dogs will struggle to smoothly transition from training to trialing. Behaviors we typically lump under “ring stress” are often the result of confusion. Going from a high rate of reinforcement to no reinforcement creates a drastically different picture. How do we go about reducing reinforcement without losing our dog’s engagement and animation? In this workshop you will learn to use your reinforcers thoughtfully and mindfully. This workshop provides you with a variety of techniques to reduce reinforcement including jackpots, variable reinforcement, pieces of exercises as tricks, meaningful praise and more! You can pick and choose the techniques that work best for you and your dog. You CAN reduce your dog’s reliance on a high reinforcement rate.

I have been training and competing for several decades in a variety of sports including Hunt Tests, Field Trials, Nosework, Agility and Rally. My first love has always been competition obedience. I have been fortunate to win the AKC National Obedience Championship four times with three different dogs. (Click here for full bio and to view Petra's upcoming courses)
