RA270: Get Ready to Rally - The Signs and Adding Precision and Fluency

    Course Details

During this class, we will focus on learning the signs of the four most popular Rally venues: AKC, WCRL, UKC, and ASCA.  If you compete in another venue and need help with a sign that we are not covering, let me know and we’ll add it! We will review each sign and explain exactly how the sign should be performed, including practicing any footwork that is needed for the sign, plus moving into and out of the sign.  We will also start to acclimate your dog to the signs on the ground as well as practice staying connected to your dog when you are distracted by the signs. In addition, we will continue to build on the skills that were taught in the first Get Ready to Rally class by adding precision and fluency.  By the end of this course, you and your dog will have a solid understanding of how to perform each sign correctly and you both will be navigating past the signs confidently while staying connected to each other.

This class will feature a TA (Teacher's Assistant), Ann Smorado.  Ann will be active in the bronze study group and can review videos for bronze and silvers students.

Here's a trailer for the class!

Here is a video of one of my students competing in AKC Rally Novice A.  Her border collie Ranger earned a perfect score on this run!

    Prerequisites and Equipment

There are no formal prerequisites for this class, however, it is expected that your dog is familiar with the skills needed for the beginner levels of Rally.  RA260 is a suggested prerequisite for those wanting to polish the behaviors.

Up to 4 cones, buckets, or another object will be needed for some skills.

Props may be used (sit platforms, gates, pivot bowl, etc) but are not required.

We will be acclimating the dog to signs on the ground during this class so you'll need to have a piece of cardstock propped up on a cone.

    Tips

If you are going to verbally cue your dog, do so as you’re stopping, not after you’ve stopped.  This will help prepare your dog for the halt. When I halt, I plant my left foot, then bring my right foot up to meet my left.  I say sit when I plant my left foot.

Many handlers have the tendency to accidentally step into their dogs on the halt.  As a result, dogs may sit wide or crooked. If this happens repeatedly, the dog won’t trust the handler to stay in their own lane, and may start heeling wide.  I find that planting your left foot helps prevent stepping into the dog. As you’re halting, be conscious that you are staying in your own lane, and not stepping into your dog.

Once your dog has sat, you may begin heeling to the next sign.

    Homework

Show me a few halts!  Heel a few steps, do a halt, heel a few more, then reward.  Remember to break it down if you need to.

A sampling of what prior students have said about this course ...

Nicole's class was a lifesaver for me and my dog. We wanted to study rally but our options were bleak and then magically Nicole's class appeared on the Fenzi calendar. She is a wonderful, caring instructor and we are so pleased that Fenzi Dog Sport Academy has chosen to fill this gap in its curriculum.

Nicole is an excellent instructor. She gives prompt and detailed feedback that always is on target, and she is very positive and supportive.         This is my second Rally class with Nicole. I think her Rally classes have been excellent and I think she is doing very job as a newer FDSA instructor. She provides positive, detailed feedback that has helped us improve our skills.

I have been taking Fenzi courses at Gold for at least 2 years now. Nicole is one of the best instructors on Fenzi. Her lectures are concise with clear video examples. The videos are shot really well and it is clear that they are being made purposefully for the course topic. She responds reliably to any posted video and usually has helpful advice. She will critique in detail, for example:" at 42 seconds, do you see how you stepped into Rudy's path? The serves to push him away. This is very helpful because then I can see where my errors are. I will take more classes from Nicole.

Nicole was AWESOME!! She is very quick with evaluation of submitted videos. She has great ideas to help with bumps in the road. I have seen such a huge improvement in my dog's skills over the 6 weeks of the course. I was very intimidated to sign up for a Gold level as I am a pretty green trainer. Nicole was so welcoming and made the experience so much fun!!! Definitely will be taking class again from Nicole!

Nicole is an awesome teacher! She cares about the success of her students. She works with each one at the level where they are at and gives excellent feedback for them to succeed. Love her teaching style!

Nicole was a great instructor. She was engaged and involved for the whole class and every Gold got equal time. She has an excellent eye for spotting areas that need to be cleaned up, and a number of methods to work on to help her students. I can't wait for her next class!
