Build Beautiful Heeling Without the Stress
Are you stuck on the pivot bowl? Maybe your dog has beautiful pivots on the bowl, but the minute you take the bowl away and ask them to pivot, they act like they have no idea what you're talking about! Or your dog may have a solid heel position while their front feet are on the bowl, but you aren't quite sure how to get rid of the prop and actually start moving. You may have even started working on heeling, but you're struggling with position, engagement, or putting all the pieces together.
This class will give you a clear, step-by-step plan for moving from stationary pivot work to confident, connected heeling.
We'll start by making sure your dog understands heel position and has the rear-end awareness needed to move with you. From there, we'll systematically fade the pivot bowl, begin moving forward, and build the skills your dog needs to maintain heel position in motion.
We'll use both luring and shaping throughout the class, choosing the approach that makes the most sense for the skill we're teaching. Just as importantly, we'll pay attention to reinforcement placement, handler movement, and all those little details that can make a big difference in your dog's understanding.
You'll learn:
- How to build engagement and value for heel position
- Rear-end awareness skills that transfer from the pivot bowl to heeling
- How to fade the pivot bowl and other props
- How to use reinforcement placement to improve position and focus
- How to transition from stationary skills to forward movement
- How to add turns and changes of pace while maintaining heel position
- How to troubleshoot common problems before they become habits
Whether you're just beginning to teach heeling or you've been sitting at the pivot bowl wondering what comes next, this class will help you take the skills you already have and turn them into practical heeling.
If you're ready to get off the pivot bowl and start moving, join me!

Teaching Approach
Lectures are released on the first day of each week and include step-by-step written instruction plus short demonstration videos for each skill. Most videos are between 20 seconds and 2 minutes long, making them easy to fit into even a busy schedule. Videos are designed to be understood even without sound. If speaking is important in a video, the lecture will clearly outline what is being said. Homework is included at the end of each lecture so you always know what to practice. Supplemental lectures and videos will be posted as needed. This class is a great fit for students who enjoy clear written instruction paired with short, visual demonstrations.
