DS545: Steadiness for Fetch, Hunt Tests & Water Rescue

Course Details

This course is about off leash Steadiness for AKC FETCH tests, HUNT tests, WATER Rescue test and VERSATILE gundog tests and more!

Ever held on to your dog's collar for dear life, while throwing a retrieve?  And felt like you'll never get her steady to a ball or bumper? Or maybe it works fine in training, but tests are a different story?

In this course, you will learn what steadiness really is and how to create it with joy, clarity and awesome teamwork! You will get real results that translate easily to the field. A technique you will take to any environment. The key is to use the dog's drive and channel it into teamwork at the line. And I'll show you how!

Real steadiness is NOT:
 - A battle of control
 - It's not "Sit means sit!" This is NOT a battle between your sit cue and the temptation of the throw.
 - It's definitely not about intimidation "you better not!"
 - And it is NOT a "Leave It " cue.

So what is it ?

What if you were confident, relaxed, and knowing your dog is reliable and steady for each throw? She's clear and you are clear.

You're not on edge, fearing she may break at any moment. There's no constant tension between your sit cue and the temptation to GO for it!

Real steadiness is a behavior your dog is offering - to earn the reward of going! In my teaching approach, the dog understands what the behavior of steadiness is and how it earns them what they really want - the release to go!

It's not just the GO that's valuable - it's also the game of working with you, offering the behavior of self control to get you to offer the release word! Just like any other behavior that a dog offers to earn a click or a reward.

Just like any other behavior we teach, such as hand targeting, or platform - once we get the dog doing the thing to earn the click, we can then add more things - like duration, multiple throws and tempting noises. But this is not a treat exchange - this food for that self control. This is a value exchange, transferring their drive to go into the offer to stay.

That's what creates crystal clarity and gives you amazing confidence in your dog to wait for your release.

Teaching Approach:

We will start from scratch in week one and build each layer of the steadiness process through week 6 of class.

There will be short video lessons each week. As well as written outlines of each lesson procedure.

Group zoom classroom calls will happen in week 1, 3, and 6. Anyone in class may attend live and partake in the live discussion. These calls are optional for course participants and will be recorded and posted in the lectures.

Layer One: Learning the behavior of steadiness using food. And channeling the value of getting the food into the behavior.

Layer Two: Building value and clarity for the release cue. And value for your control position [sit, stand, heel]

Combining a control position with the behavior of steadiness & how all three work together.

Layer Three: Taking your behavior outside. Switching out food for objects (toys, bumpers, more)

Layer Four: The role of mistakes and "breaking". Controlling the reward, not the dog.

Layer Five: Multiple Marks / throws And adding other temptations and durations.

Layer Six: The outdoor triple mark drill with noises and throwers.

Prerequisites and Equipment

To make the most of this course...

It's helpful to have a mat or platform targeting behavior with your dog, where they know to get on it and either sit or stand for rewards.

It's also helpful to form a specific picture in your mind of what steadiness will look like for your sport. Knowing what it looks like, plus the when and where, is helpful for forming your specific training plan.
For example:
In AKC Fetch Advanced & Retriever levels, we want our dog to be sitting or standing steady while facing into the field while singles, doubles & triple marks are thrown by another person, who is also walking from station to station.

In AKC Retriever Hunt Tests Senior & Master levels, we want our dog to sit in heel position facing the field while gunners blow duck calls and shoot a gun. Plus there will be double and triple marks thrown. You also need steadiness for Honoring another working dog's marks.

In Newfoundland Water Rescue Tests upper levels, we want our dog to stand steady by our side while looking at out at multiple people or objects in the water, waiting for us to send them for the one we want.

In each instance, there is something we want the dog to be looking at, a position we want them to be in and temptations vying for their attention.
Get clear about your goals to make the most of this course.

More

The Multiple Throws & Sounds Drill - a bridging exercise between your foundations and the real deal.

Now that you have deep trust in your dog to offer steadiness, we can grow this awesomeness into the real challenges of hunt tests, and fetch tests.

Whether it's hunt or fetch or water rescue, you will encounter multiple throws or options to retrieve and there will be sounds and movements to tempt your dog to go.

So now we put our foundations steps from the last weeks into action. You already have trust and clarity for single throws outdoors.

Plus you have trust and amazing choices for MULTIPLE throws inside!

It's time to put it together and stretch your skills!

Below are two videos showing step by step how to build up to multiple throw steadiness. One is prepping for hunt test multiples with duck calls and guns. The other is for AKC Fetch multiples with three barrier stations.

Hunt Test prep video: In this video I show an exercise for you to do with a friend or two launchers. Goes faster with a human, though. Read description below video link

The Big Picture

All four stages of this exercise take place in the same location. So the tosses in stages one and two are the same toss locations in stages 3 and 4.

Staying in the same spot creates a layered exercise building tolerance in the dog, making it easier to offer steadiness with new temptations.

This allows us to add pieces until get the full double with duch calls and gunfire. A critical foundation piece before going to the field for a real double mark.

The steps / stages of the exercise

  1. Single toss to the left - Quack and toss [wait 2 seconds to release dog]
  2. Single toss to the right - Quack, shoot, toss [wait 2-4 secs to release]
  3. Double with only one shot - Left, quack, shoot, toss + Right, quack, toss
  4. Double with everything - Right, quack, shoot, toss + Left, quack, shoot, toss.

AKC Fetch Video

In this video, I show how to build steadiness for Fetch test doubles and triples with myself as thrower. You can easily transfer this exercise to one with a helper throwing the retrieves. Again - it's critical to have our foundation steps from the first weeks of this course in place, before trying this!
