Mindset in dog training is often discussed in terms of fixed versus growth, but there’s a lot more nuance. This webinar introduces a fuller picture, including stress mindset and expert bias, and explores how these mental frameworks affect the choices we make, the results we see, and the relationships we build with our dogs and our students. Through a mix of personal reflection and research-backed strategies, participants will learn how to notice when their mindset is helping or getting in the way, and what to do about it. This isn’t just about theory or awareness. It’s about learning how to apply that awareness in training, with practical tools that change the way you show up. You’ll come away with a deeper understanding of how belief drives behavior, how to interrupt patterns that aren’t working, and how to build habits that lead to meaningful progress. The BAG of TRICKS is the framework we’ll use to bring these concepts to life. It stands for:
- Belief creates
- Action, which creates
- Growth And to make that growth effective, we need:
- Timing
- Reinforcement
- Imagination
- Criteria, set clearly and appropriately
- Kindness as a guiding principle
- Senses — not just what you see and hear, but your ability to feel what’s happening in the moment. That includes your intuition, emotional awareness, and a sense of humor. Because progress in training can be messy, and the ability to laugh, reset, and keep going is part of what makes it sustainable.
This webinar is for anyone working with dogs (trainers, handlers, sport competitors, and pet owners) who want to understand how their mindset affects the learning process. It’s also for instructors and coaches who want to better support mindset shifts in their clients and students.
By the end of the session, participants will:
- Be able to identify and shift between fixed, growth, and stress mindsets.
- Understand how expert bias can create blind spots, even for experienced trainers.
- Learn how to use reflection intentionally to improve clarity and confidence.
- Apply the BAG of TRICKS framework to real training decisions and situations.
- Walk away with lifelong tools to build belief systems that support curiosity, adaptability, and joy in training.
