Do you have a gundog? Would you like to learn how to achieve a reliable 'stop' behaviour? (Most commonly, a 'remote sit', but also 'whoa' or stand.)
Well now, you've come to the right place...
All gundogs which handle or take casts, need to be able to be stopped - so they can then be given the casts, when retrieving. Dogs which flush game (spaniels and, in some countries, pointing breeds too), need to have a 'remote sit' at the flush. If you have a pointing breed and you want them to stand (whoa) at the flush, you can still use the principles covered on this workshop. You will just select a different position (stand) to reinforce instead.
This approach uses food (specifically, cheddar - but you can substitute any pale treat!) to train the behaviour. I also show you a version with a tennis ball and chucker. You can use both these methods alongside each other, if both these reinforcers work for your dog. Or you can use just one of them, for equally good results.
There is even a version you can use indoors, if you only have access to an indoor area at the moment. (The bigger the indoor area, the better - but you can also do it in your hallway if that's the only space you have.)
Achieving a 'stop' with no distractions around, is obviously a lot easier than achieving a 'stop' off-leash outdoors at the flush, shot or fall - or on the go-out for a retrieve.
This workshop shows you how to begin this behaviour - with the goal of achieving a reliable remote stop in a rural environment. We will also talk about how to progress things further to those more challenging scenarios.
