Course Details

During this 6 week course, the handler can decide on WHATEVER it is that they want to work on for the duration of the course.

Yes, that's right! Absolutely anything related to your dog's scent work journey can be covered! At the commencement of the class, the Gold participants will specify up to four distinct areas that they wish to focus on, which will then be progressed throughout the 6 weeks.

This will be your chance to partake in a ‘tailored’ made class for YOU!

Here are some examples you could focus on:

- Preparing for the NW TEAM Titling program

- Improving your handling

- Address/prevent peeing in search areas

- Teaching a trained indication

- Preparing for your first trials - develop the right plan for your team!

- NW3 training and strategy

- Preparing for and what to expect in Elite trialing

- Prepaing for advanced AKC SW trialing

- Handler Discrimination Scent Work

- Working on intentional or unintentional distractions.

- Building more stay at source

- Keeping your training on track.

- Hide Placements - what is good, bad and what to expect at trials

- Polishing specific element search skills (containers, vehicles, interiors, exteriors, buried)

For silver and bronze students, core lectures are available from past class topics, as well as new material added based on what people choose to work on. There will always be something to come back and look up after the class is over!

Teaching Approach

This class is not lecture specific since content is driven by handler topics. Based on the handlers topics, some previously available lectures are provided to more easily document the steps and exercises. Each student thread is taylored for their needs and provided with specific steps for working on their areas. Frequent feedback is give as needed to progress each team to their fullest. Feedback is all written with video examples given as necessary.

More

This course is the handler's choice so it does not contain preset lectures, but contains lectures from past class topics.  Here is one lecture capturing thoughs and reflections on the sport of nosework:

I'm constantly reflecting on the sport of Nosework, it's growth and how we train the skills.

The growth and popularity of Nosework/Scent Work is astronomical - with over 11 trialing organizations and many online opportunities now. The growth has been a little too fast in a sense that lately skills have been rushed and trialing has been quick to start. With any new sport (think agility and even obedience) we develop better techniques for training the skills and preparing for competition. With nosework being so new, we are still evolving and learning.

I don't have a magic wand (well, maybe it works sometimes :)) or set recipes to solve all the things, but I know my approach is to be simplistic. Nosework can be challenging, but I don't approach it with complexity. I believe most ideas have already been put out there so now our role is to think out of the box and be creative for our particular situation and partner. We may go back to a proven method, modify one that is out there or come up with something new.

Often a setback is due to a crack in our foundation - there always will be from time to time, or that we under or over train. It goes without saying that training actually helps our cause! Sometimes the most simplistic solution is to get out there and train. You are all here because of your motivation and commitment to train and improve your game. We got the most important part solved :).

We can be resourceful and look at other general training methods we can apply to affect arousal, proof for understanding, build motivation, improve handling, build skills, and plan our training sessions. None of this is new to dog training and we can take advantage of all these great advancements in dog training.

Everytime we are faced with a challenge, either with our own dog or a students, we learn. We learn a new way, a new perspective, a new approach. We may not have all the answers when a problem arises, but we will have the ability and resources to do our best to find a way to improve and change and grow. With so many learning opportunities out there, it comes down to using what makes sense to us. If we don't understand why we are doing something then we will never fully implement or execute the approach or method.

The excitement with the growth of scent detection sports is real and I'm happy to be on the ride with all of you and everyone else!

A sampling of what prior students have said about this course ...

Julie provided excellent suggestions and training set ups to help us reach our class goals. The feedback on each exercise was precise and encouraging. I feel we made progress on each goal and I enjoyed the entire process with Julie leading me.

Julie is knowledgeable in the area of nosework, and an excellent observer of both handler and dog -- critical to any teaching situation, but especially in an online situation. She has a knack for constructive criticism, able to help someone see their weaknesses and errors without making them feel "wrong." I wish I could send her a video for feedback EVERY week!

Julie really showed her knowledge and expertise in the handler’s choice class. She kept up in the forums (despite 15 active teams working on many different things) and provided useful guidance and explanations both for each individual student and for those following that thread.

Julie, I’m so pleased you offered the handler’s choice class. It was helpful to figure out what we need to work on and then start the problem solving process.

Julie’s input was fantastic! We were able to work on our weaknesses and make them into strengths! Loved my 6 weeks and sad that it’s over.

Thanks Julie! My evolution as a NW handler is very slow but you have been very helpful in moving me along. I'll look forward to taking more classes with you when my puppy comes!
