FE195: Love the One You Are With - Being the Best Team Possible

Course Details

Have you found yourself looking at your animal partner thinking "I don't much like you", "you aren't what I wanted" or wondering how to deal with a behaviour or personality that has caught you unawares? Making the best of a tough situation is great but will only get you so far. Sitting down and really studying the roots of the challenges you face and developing specific, personalized strategies to assist you makes a measurable difference in acceptance and contentment. Animal sports in this regard, are no different than the rest of life. Join us as a Gold (homework, personalized attention), Silver (participant) or Bronze (silent auditor) student and start loving the one in front of you and working better with them too!  This course will have a TA (the talented and wonderful Jill Stoller)  to help bronze students stay on track and get support!

This class, like all of mine, is largely written lectures but I am trying an experiment this time and also doing a voice recording of each lecture, I am trying to read the lectures word for word but of course, oral and written language are different!

Relationship Matters

This week we are going to be delving into what relationship in your unique and specific context means. Many of you are taking this course because you are struggling with a disconnection between you and your animal partner. Simply discovering you aren’t alone in your feelings, some of which are likely pretty negative and have probably shocked you more than once, is validating and an important part of why FDSA decided to run the course. But there is so much more we can do to improve relationships. Engagement, management, relationship building, focus, drive, impulse control are all great courses to help you both. And yes, my expectation is this takes teamwork, you alone can’t “fix” a disconnection, nor can an animal. Interesting eh? The expectation is not that you should work in isolation but that you must work on both sides of the leash or lead line.

Those of you who have taken classes with me before know there are often links to readings (both in lectures and in threads). I get notes long after a course is closed thanking me for the links but don’t worry about reading them all each week.

This class will be no different and why not get right to it ... I laughed when this blog post popped up on a friend's feed – this course has been named since March or April  2016 at the latest

http://www.drjensdogblog.com/on-expectations-and-disappointments-love-the-one-youre-with/

I particularly appreciate the first hand story as I think many people expect to go a different direction than they go when they set out to get “that particular” puppy,

Your first homework.. if your introduction didn’t delve into all of this – or if you haven’t done your intro yet

Why did you choose this specific course? Which other courses of this type have you taken? What is the disconnection, if any, between you and your partner and how is it affecting you both?

Golds: Show us two short (no more than 2 min total) video clips - the good or best moment you can and a piece that illustrates why you are taking this course!

A special note to bronze ... the bronze who get the most from the courses actually do, and write out the answers to the assignments ...just the process of personalizing the answers is valid though if writing it out is too much - don't be afraid to do the work.

A sampling of what prior students have said about this course ...

It was the great experience for me and my dog. I liked it very much! It helps me to see my dog from another point of view. Very "strong" lessons make me to be more attentive, vigilant and considerate of my dog and his needs. This course shows me the new way how to be happy with my dog, and, of course, it is another step helping my dog to be happy and confident. Thank you very much.

THANK YOU, ANDREA! for all your support and offering these wonderful classes. Also, thank you for understanding when life gets in the way and it makes it difficult to work my brain so hard and have to take a brief break from my gold forum. You are a true FDSA gem :-)

The class really helped me go deeper into exploring more of the facets of my relationship with my dog. The lectures and homework were good because they triggered what needed to come to the surface for me to look at and work on. I really liked how you can explore the emotional pieces of the relationship but also work develop some problem solving tools that I could use to help me change how I looked at the situation between me and my dog. I hope the class will be offered in the future.

Thank you very much! Your work is very important for me.
