WW475: Sept 1- Thoracic Limb Strength and Conditioning: Front End Strength

Course Details

Many of our sports skills have intense physical requirements, and in particular for our dogs' front end. The thoracic limb is held in placid in your dog primarily by muscle and soft tissue. They have a vastly reduced collar bone, which means their thoracic limb is not attached with bony joints like in our shoulders. For this reason muscle strength can not only help with functional strength, but also shoulder stability.

When performing weave poles dogs front limb are moving in a large range of directions - they are flexing, extending, abducting, adducting, and in for some dog’s depending on their build and mechanic of this exercise may also include rotation. A lack of strength in the front limbs could not only reduce a dog's ability to successfully perform this skill, but also has the potential for injury.

This workshop will cover:

  • - Anatomy and biomechanics of the thoracic limb
  • - What is normal (and functional) range of motion of the front limb
  • - A number of front limb strength specific exercises
  • - Carpal and toe strength exercises
  • - Flexibility exercises

Dogs in working spot teams should have clearance to be doing fitness training. If your dog has had an injury, medical issue, or you are otherwise unsure if this is suitable for your dog please check with your dogs healthcare professional, or contact Kelly.
