“Begin as you mean to go on” by Charles H. Spurgeon is a quote I keep in mind when working with my puppies. I really want to instill some basic concepts that will form the foundation of our relationship. These include learning that I am fun, I am a very valuable resource that controls other resources, I will listen when you try to communicate with me, and I always have your back.
How do you start your puppy down the path to focus? The key is to make focus a central part of all your interactions. It’s easier than you might think! Focus can become the basis of your relationship, especially when you start early.
I also remind myself that focused puppy training is NOT serious business (if you’re doing it right). We can have a mutually enjoyable time with focus at the center. In this presentation I will share my 5 focus categories (food, toy, moving, control, & tactile) and their associated focus games. The games are easy enough for puppies and will support focus in all your future work together.
