WP240: Training Problem or Medical Issue? Red Flags for Veterinary Referral

Course Details

As a pet dog trainer, you won’t just be teaching basic obedience skills – you’ll also be asked to help with a variety of so-called “problem behaviors” that your clients and their pups may be struggling with.  What you might NOT know is that many of these behavior issues can have medical causes! In this workshop, we’ll discuss a variety of different case presentations that may appear to be behavioral issues at first glance … but which actually need a veterinary visit, rather than a training plan. Make sure you know what to look for, so you can refer your clients to their veterinarian for diagnostics and medical treatment when needed.

You will learn general red flags that suggest a possible medical problem, examples of specific presenting problems that often have a medical cause, and questions to ask that can help you determine whether a problem is behavioral or medical.

Class Syllabus

  • General characteristics that suggest a medical issue

  • Housetraining problems

  • Pica/excessive licking
