WP535: My Ball, My Food, My Space! Handling Resource Guarding

This workshop will give you skills for preventing and handling mild resource guarding cases. There are lots of ways families can manage resource guarding and safely and steadily change the dog’s emotions around their resources. We are going to discuss not only a few prevention techniques that are easy to implement, but also more detailed training plans that can address mild cases of resource guarding. We are going to review case studies and discuss when to refer the case to a specialist.

Class Syllabus

• Consult process: keeping things safe, from entering the house to training and managing

• Common resources dogs tend to guard

• How to read the dog’s body language, from obvious displays to very subtle signs

• Games for prevention: toys without conflicts, hands are friends, sharing spaces

• Changing emotions through classical conditioning and operant conditioning
